What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a medical condition characterized by the overdevelopment or enlargement of breast tissue in men and boys. This growth can be caused by an imbalance between the hormones estrogen and testosterone, certain medications, or underlying health issues. While often benign, the condition can lead to physical tenderness and significant emotional distress.

Treatment typically involves male breast reduction surgery, which aims to restore a flatter, more contoured appearance to the chest by removing excess glandular tissue, fat, and sometimes redundant skin.

How It Works

  • Consultation: The surgeon evaluates whether the enlargement is primarily fat (pseudogynecomastia), glandular tissue, or a combination of both to determine the best surgical approach.
  • Anesthesia: The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the complexity of the case.
  • Liposuction: If the enlargement is mainly fatty tissue, the surgeon uses liposuction to suction out the excess through small, discreet incisions.
  • Surgical Excision: For patients with significant glandular tissue or excess skin, the surgeon makes an incision—often around the edge of the nipple (areola)—to manually remove the tissue.
  • Closing and Recovery: Incisions are closed with sutures, and a compression garment is applied to minimize swelling and support the new chest contour during initial healing.

Who It's For

  • Men whose condition has not improved through lifestyle changes or alternative medical treatments.
  • Individuals in good overall health with a stable body weight.
  • Non-smokers or those willing to quit before and after surgery to ensure optimal wound healing.
  • Men with realistic expectations who are bothered by the appearance or physical discomfort of enlarged breasts.

Benefits

  • Improved Chest Contour: Creates a firmer, flatter, and more traditionally masculine chest profile.
  • Enhanced Self-Confidence: Many patients feel more comfortable in fitted clothing or when shirtless in public settings.
  • Physical Relief: Reduces the weight and sensitivity often associated with enlarged breast tissue, making physical activities more comfortable.
  • Permanent Results: Once glandular tissue is surgically removed, it does not typically grow back, provided a healthy weight and lifestyle are maintained.

Limitations & Risks

  • Visible Scarring: While surgeons place incisions in natural creases, some permanent scarring is inevitable.
  • Asymmetry: There is a possibility that the chest may not appear perfectly symmetrical after the healing process is complete.
  • Sensory Changes: Temporary or permanent numbness or changes in nipple sensation can occur.
  • Surgical Complications: Potential risks include infection, bleeding (hematoma), or adverse reactions to anesthesia.
  • Recovery Period: Patients generally require one to two weeks off work and must avoid strenuous exercise for several weeks.

Questions to Ask Your Clinic

  • Are you board-certified in plastic surgery and how many gynecomastia procedures have you performed?
  • Which technique—liposuction, excision, or a combination—do you recommend for my specific case?
  • What are the specific risks and potential complications based on my medical history?
  • Can I see before-and-after photos of previous patients with similar chest profiles?
  • What is the expected recovery timeline, and how long will I need to wear a compression garment?
