What Is a Gastric Balloon?

A gastric balloon, also known as an intragastric balloon, is a non-surgical and temporary weight loss intervention. It involves placing a soft, medical-grade silicone balloon into the stomach to occupy space, which helps the patient feel full faster and eat smaller portions. Unlike bariatric surgeries, it does not involve permanent changes to the digestive system's anatomy.

This procedure is often considered a middle ground for individuals who have not achieved sufficient results through diet and exercise but are not candidates for, or do not wish to undergo, invasive surgery. The balloon is typically left in place for a period of four to twelve months, depending on the specific type of device used.

How It Works

  • Insertion: Depending on the type, the balloon is either placed endoscopically while the patient is under mild sedation or swallowed as a capsule that is then inflated via a thin catheter.
  • Volume Restriction: Once inflated with sterile saline or gas, the balloon occupies approximately one-third of the stomach's volume, physically limiting the amount of food that can be consumed at once.
  • Satiety and Digestion: The presence of the balloon triggers hormonal signals of fullness and slows down gastric emptying, meaning food stays in the stomach longer.
  • Removal: After the treatment period, the balloon is deflated and removed endoscopically, or in the case of swallowable versions, it deflates automatically and passes naturally through the digestive tract.

Who It's For

  • Adults with a Body Mass Index (BMI) typically between 30 and 40, though some clinics accept patients with a BMI as low as 27.
  • Individuals who have been unable to lose weight through traditional diet and lifestyle modifications alone.
  • Patients looking for a reversible, non-permanent weight loss solution.
  • Those who are willing to commit to a supervised nutrition and behavioral modification program to maintain results.

Benefits

  • No Surgery Required: The procedure does not involve incisions, stitches, or general anesthesia in most cases.
  • Reversible: The balloon is temporary and can be removed at any time if the patient experiences intolerance.
  • Significant Weight Loss: Patients typically lose between 10% and 15% of their total body weight during the treatment period.
  • Health Improvements: Weight loss from the procedure can lead to the improvement or remission of obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea.

Limitations & Risks

  • Initial Discomfort: Nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps are very common during the first 3 to 5 days as the stomach adjusts to the balloon.
  • Weight Regain: Because the procedure is temporary, there is a risk of regaining weight after the balloon is removed if long-term lifestyle changes are not maintained.
  • Rare Complications: Potential but rare risks include gastric ulcers, balloon deflation, or intestinal obstruction.
  • Dietary Discipline: Success depends heavily on the patient's adherence to a specific diet and exercise plan provided by the clinic.
