Forehead Reduction
What Is Forehead Reduction?
Forehead reduction, also known as hairline lowering surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to shorten the vertical height of the forehead. By physically advancing the scalp forward, surgeons can reduce the distance between the eyebrows and the hairline, creating a more harmonious balance between the upper, middle, and lower thirds of the face. Unlike hair transplants, which add individual follicles to create a new hairline, this procedure moves the existing hair-bearing scalp to a lower position.
How It Works
- Incision: A specialized incision is made along the front of the hairline. Surgeons often use a trichophytic incision, which is angled to allow hair follicles to grow through the resulting scar, making it less visible.
- Scalp Advancement: The scalp is surgically loosened from the underlying tissue, allowing it to be stretched forward toward the face.
- Excision: The excess skin of the forehead is carefully measured and removed.
- Fixation and Closure: The hairline is secured in its new, lower position using internal sutures or dissolvable anchors, and the skin is closed with fine stitches.
Who It's For
- Individuals with a naturally high hairline or a large forehead who feel their features are out of proportion.
- Patients with good scalp laxity (flexibility), which is necessary to move the skin forward effectively.
- Women or men with a stable hairline and no history of progressive hair loss or thinning.
- Those who want a significant change in forehead height in a single surgical session.
Benefits
- Immediate Results: The new hairline position is visible as soon as the surgery is complete.
- Natural Hair Density: Because the original hairline is moved forward, the density and texture of the hair remain completely natural.
- Permanent Correction: The physical advancement of the scalp provides a lasting solution for a high forehead.
- Facial Symmetry: It can significantly improve the aesthetic balance of the face and increase self-confidence.
Limitations & Risks
- Visible Scarring: While techniques are used to hide the scar, it may remain visible, especially if hair does not grow through the incision site as expected.
- Numbness: Temporary or permanent loss of sensation in the scalp behind the incision is a common side effect.
- Shock Loss: Some patients experience temporary hair thinning near the incision line during the first few months of healing.
- Not for Active Balding: This procedure is generally not recommended for men with active male pattern baldness, as further recession would expose the surgical scar.
- Scalp Tension: If the scalp is overstretched, it can lead to wider scars or poor healing.
