What Is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, medically known as a mastopexy, is a surgical procedure intended to raise and reshape sagging breasts. Over time, factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, and the natural aging process can cause the skin to lose its elasticity, leading to a loss of firmness and a drooping appearance.

The procedure focuses on removing redundant skin and tightening the remaining tissue to create a more uplifted and aesthetically pleasing breast contour. While it improves the position and shape, a standard breast lift does not significantly change the size of the breasts; patients seeking more volume often combine the lift with breast implants.

How It Works

  • Anesthesia: The surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia to ensure the patient is comfortable and asleep throughout the procedure.
  • Incision Patterns: The surgeon makes incisions based on the degree of sagging. Common techniques include the periareolar (around the areola), vertical (lollipop-shaped), or inverted-T (anchor-shaped) incisions.
  • Reshaping the Tissue: The underlying breast tissue is lifted and reshaped to improve firmness and create a more youthful mound.
  • Nipple Repositioning: The nipple and areola are moved to a higher, more natural position on the breast. If the areolas have stretched, they may also be reduced in size.
  • Skin Removal and Closure: Excess skin is removed to compensate for the loss of elasticity, and the remaining skin is brought together and sutured to support the new breast shape.

Who It's For

  • Individuals with breasts that have lost their shape, volume, or firmness due to aging or weight loss.
  • Women whose breasts have become flatter, elongated, or heavy after pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Patients whose nipples point downward or fall below the breast crease.
  • Those with asymmetrical breasts where one sits significantly lower than the other.
  • Individuals in good overall health who have realistic expectations about surgical outcomes and scarring.

Benefits

  • Restored Contour: Provides a firmer, more uplifted breast profile that appears more youthful.
  • Improved Nipple Position: Corrects downward-pointing nipples and can reduce the size of enlarged areolas.
  • Enhanced Symmetry: Helps balance breasts that are uneven in height or shape.
  • Better Clothing Fit: Many patients find that bras, swimwear, and fitted clothing fit more comfortably and look more flattering.
  • Long-lasting Results: While the body continues to age, the structural improvements made during a lift are generally durable.

Limitations & Risks

  • Permanent Scarring: All breast lift techniques result in permanent scars, though they typically fade over time and are often hidden by bras or swimwear.
  • No Size Change: A lift alone does not add volume; it only repositions existing tissue.
  • Sensation Changes: Some patients may experience temporary or, in rare cases, permanent changes in nipple or breast sensation.
  • Surgical Risks: As with any major surgery, there are risks of infection, bleeding, hematoma, and adverse reactions to anesthesia.
  • Breastfeeding: While many women can still breastfeed after a lift, the procedure can sometimes impact milk production or the ability to nurse.

Questions to Ask Your Clinic

  • How many mastopexy procedures do you perform annually, and can I see before-and-after photos?
  • Which incision technique do you recommend for my specific degree of sagging?
  • Will this procedure affect my ability to breastfeed in the future?
  • What is the expected recovery timeline before I can return to work and exercise?
  • What are the options if I am not satisfied with the final symmetry or shape?
